Filings have confirmed that DJI is releasing a new drone in the very near future. The DJI Mavic Air 2.

New FCC filings released on Thursday confirm that DJI will be naming it’s next drone the DJI Mavic Air 2. Twitter user OsitaLV has been releasing pictures of the since drone last month and now we have confirmation that these pictures are in fact the latest DJI offering and not a hoax. From Osita’s pictures we can glean a lot about the Air 2, it will have downward vision sensors, including an infrared sensor, forward and backwards vision sensors but no upward sensors and the jury is still out on side sensors but from the pictures it does not appear to have them.
It’s size is between the Mavic Mini and the Mavic 2 Pro, with the design taking a lot from both of those models, including the same fold up arm design, and similar battery and propeller interface designs to the Mavic 2.
The battery is larger than the previous model Air, which had a 21 minute flight time using a 2375 milliamp hour battery, making it possible this new model will be closer to a 30 minute flight time with it’s beefier 3500 milliamp hour battery.
We are also seeing a brand new minimalist design RC controller, and more information confirming the leak of Osita’s picture to be true. The new RC is much larger and has the phone mounting point at the top instead of the bottom as per previous Mavic RC designs. We are also getting a 3-Axis gimbal with a presumably at least 4k camera, hopefully up to 60fps and RAW photos. There also appears to be a downward facing LED light, and possibly lights affixed to the ends of the arms like the Mavic 2. There’s a similar design in the bottom to the original mavic pro, sharing the heat sink looking fins as the pro. The original air had a max speed of 42mph, and a flight distance of up to 6.2 miles, so we should see similar if not better specifications. We should also see more of the features people are missing from the Mavic Mini, including ActiveTrack, Occusync 2.0 and USB-C charging is confirmed.
If you’re looking for another sub 250 gram drone, look again, the battery is bigger so I don’t expect it to be much lighter, if at all, than the original Air’s 430 grams. We should also be seeing the first DJI drone being deployed with an ADS-B system, allowing it to broadcast its position to other aircraft and receive other aircrafts positions. ADS-B stands for automatic depenedent surveillance – broadcast and it’s a technology that determines the aircrafts position by navigation satellites and automatically broadcasts it allowing the aircraft to be easily tracked by other aircraft and Air Traffic Control.
I’m guessing a similar price point to the Air, so around $800 for the Air 2, and $1000 for the Fly More combo. I am expecting the DJI website to cryptically announce any day a countdown to a big announcement. Hopefully we will see that in the next week, with a release in the next month. Start saving up those deposits and spend those stimulus checks on your new DJI Mavic Air 2.
